A PhD or Doctor of Philosophy is a postgraduate degree which is awarded by most universities to students who show a complete understanding in a given subject area. Once the student has completed there three years they are then given twelve months to submit a thesis on the subject and also their peer reviewed research documents. The course can actually take up to eight years to complete but this is dependent totally on the students ability to complete all course and task work associated in the given time frame. There are also other types of commitments available to the student in terms of the structure of the course but these are bespoke to each student and should be negotiated before the commencement of the course with the head of studies at the university.
