What is an LLM

An LLM or Master of law degree is an advanced academic qualification which is obtained by students who have shown that they are of full understanding and extremely competent in their field of expertise.

There are many types of LLM courses for students to undertake which allows them to learn the exact field of law they wish to be involved in. Some students may wish to study Environmental law and others may wish study the law on Taxation giving the student complete choice of where they would like to focus gaining their knowledge for the future.

The course itself will teach the students to have an unrivalled knowledge in their field and show they can complete several complex tasks throughout the syllabus as well as having a complete comprehensive understanding of what the law entails and the regulations associated with it.

Students wishing to undertake an LLM course must first have a degree in law or the equivalent to be allowed entry on to the course as the syllabus requirements may not be as easily met by a student who does not already have a full understanding of the workings and make up of the law system.

Universities who teach LLM courses generally breakdown the work involved for the students down into two semesters and one additional period between June and September for dissertations. During each of these three periods students will gain marks on their modules and overall performance which are called credits. Each semester there are a certain amount of credits for each student to gain with these scores then being added to the previous or next semester’s total. These totals are then added up and go towards the student’s end of year course results and achievements. The students will have compulsory modules for the course and also various other optional modules which give the student unparalleled choice of exactly what he or she is wishing to learn.

Due to the fact the entry requirements of these courses state you must have a degree to gain entry to them the running period for these courses is twelve months full time.

LLM course are gaining more popularity by the day with 2011 having the highest numbers of students currently studying the Master of Laws course for many years.
